Practitioner FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions- Practitioners

Looking to start your MAT®  Certification? Check out some common questions below, our YouTube Channel, or get in touch with us directly.

  • MAT®  is a process that allows the practitioner to identify muscle dysfunction in their client’s body.
  • MAT® recognizes that whenever there is stress, trauma or overuse to the muscular system, the resultant inflammation alters the communication between the nervous system and the muscular system which alters the ability to contract efficiently
  • MAT®  can help you determine whether or not the nervous system is properly signaling to your client’s muscles in order that they can contract efficiently to stabilize joints and protect the body from injury
  • MAT®  will help you identify which muscles are not receiving neural input by performing proprietary range of motion exams, followed up by proprietary manual muscle testing techniques
  • MAT®  will help to improve the muscle contractions through specific activation techniques, which in turn, creates the ability for muscles to effectively stabilize joints and protect the body from injury.
  • MAT®  will provide you with a systematic process that ensures that your client’s strength and mobility is increased, through improving the neural input coming from the nervous system to the muscular system.

We will let our community of Practitioners help answer this question. According to MAT® Practitioner Survey from May 2019:

  • 92% of MAT® Practitioners say MAT® gives them a Unique Skill Set in the marketplace.
  • 85% of MAT® Practitioners say they enjoy the High Positive Client Outcomes that MAT® gives them.
  • Anyone in the health and exercise fields can benefit from learning the techniques that are provided in the MAT® education process
  • MAT® functions as a great adjunct to any other form of therapy or training in the health and rehab industries. By improving the neuromuscular function of your client it allows for quicker and more efficient results to occur from these other modalities

It’s for any licensed health and exercise professionals who is looking to maximize the results that they achieve with their clients. MAT® is for any practitioner who would love to experience the high client outcomes that MAT® delivers to its clients.

MAT®  looks at the body in a unique manner. MAT® recognizes that the physical stresses of everyday life and activities can take its toll on the body. As life breaks us down, from a neuromuscular standpoint, someone has to be there to put us back together. That is what MAT does for its clients. MAT does not force change on the body, instead it maximizes the function of the nervous system in order to achieve maximum muscle performance.

An MAT®  specialist uses specific assessment techniques that are designed to determine where altered neuromuscular function is occurring in the body. Each client is treated specifically towards their own specific muscle weaknesses and compensation patterns. MAT®  does not diagnose or treat pathology, but works to improve the overall function of the neuromuscular system. By improving the aspects of neuromuscular function, clients will experience an increased ability to tolerate exercise and physical performance creating a decreased risk for injury.

MAT®  differentiates itself from other modalities as its primary goal or focus is not increase the flexibility of its clients, but to improve neuromuscular function, which in turn can alleviate the protective tightening that occurs due to altered neuromuscular function.  The goal of MAT®  is to re-establish optimal communication between the nervous system and the muscular system, in order to “activate” the muscles, which in turn allows the body to more effectively handle the forces that come from exercise and every day movements.

The MAT®  Specialists Program is the first level of the MAT®  certification program. A student who completes this course is eligible to test to become an MAT®  Certified Specialist who will then be recognized and eligible to be listed on our website as a practitioner that we have certified.*

In these courses, students learn to assess for isolated weaknesses, learning muscle tests for nearly every muscle in the body. Students will attain the skills to activate every muscle throughout the body through very specific palpation techniques. Due to the complexity of the skill set needed to identify every potential muscle weakness in the body, the Specialist program is an extensive education process, involving 4 segments, Lower Body, Upper Body, Trunk and Spine, and Cervical, Hand and Foot. Each segment has an online component through Broadview University and a 2-day lab component for review and practical examination. The certification is through MAT® .

The MAT®  Mastery program is designed to fine-tune the practitioner’s practical skills by advancing exploration and practical application of Muscle Activation Techniques® to even more precisely address imbalances in specific divisions of the body. Each segment has an online component through Broadview University and a 2-day lab component for review and practical examination. The certification is through MAT® .
