What Does a MAT Practitioner Do?

As an MAT practitioner, your role is to identify and correct muscle inhibition that affects your clients’ movement, performance, and comfort. You’ll use a systematic approach to assess range of motion and muscle function, create customized treatment plans, and activate inhibited muscles through hands-on techniques.

Who Are MAT Practitioners?

MAT practitioners are often the missing link for clients who have tried everything else without success. By addressing the root causes of dysfunction, you’ll help clients achieve results that last.

Frequently Asked Questions

It’s understandable to be cautious investing in a certification. However, MAT is not just another “Weekend-to-get/Weekend-to-forget” program—it’s a specialized skill set that fills a gap in the health and wellness industry. For over two decades, MAT therapists have become highly sought after in professional sports, rehabilitation facilities, and private clinics. MAT opens doors to lucrative opportunities by offering a non-invasive, hands-on approach to treating muscle dysfunction that clients value. The success stories from our certified therapists show how they’ve built thriving practices and careers.

The cost of MAT certification might seem high at first, but the long-term benefits can far outweigh the initial investment. Many MAT therapists quickly see a return on investment by attracting clients who are willing to pay for specialized care that addresses issues other modalities haven’t resolved.

A significant portion of MAT clients are pained individuals who have tried multiple therapies like physical therapy, chiropractic care, and massage with limited to no success. They are seeking a return to their normal quality of life and are willing to invest in a solution that works. MAT fills this gap by offering a targeted approach that restores function, improves well-being, and delivers lasting results. Many therapists have built thriving, referral-based businesses by helping clients who are eager to regain their health and vitality.

“The R.O.I. is ridiculous if you take every course seriously and implement what you learn. It has been life-changing for me and my clients.” Eric Ferguson, MAT Practitioner, Austin, TX

MAT certification is more expensive than many other programs, but this reflects the exceptional value and returns it offers. Unlike other certifications, MAT provides the most unique and in-depth content in the muscle/therapy field. The breadth and depth of the material ensure that you gain a comprehensive understanding of how to identify and correct muscle inhibition.

Beyond the content, you also get access to live instruction and ongoing support from the MAT community. You’re not just learning a skill; you’re joining an exclusive network of professionals dedicated to delivering exceptional results. The high demand for MAT therapists, combined with this specialized expertise, leads to increased earning potential. Clients are willing to pay a premium for the results MAT delivers, and MAT therapists gain access to opportunities in elite settings that are not available through other certifications.

MAT gives you a unique skill set that sets you apart from other professionals in physical therapy, chiropractic care, and fitness. Being MAT-certified connects you with an elite group of therapists working with professional sports teams in  the NFL, NBA, MLB, and NHL. According to our surveys, 99% (not a misprint) of MAT therapists believe that MAT gives them a competitive edge in their market.

“Muscle Activation” is a common term used in fitness and therapy to describe exercises designed to warm up or activate muscles before activity. These exercises typically involve dynamic stretches or specific movements aimed at getting muscles ready for action. While useful, these exercises are general in nature and don’t address deeper issues in muscle function.

On the other hand, Muscle Activation Techniques (MAT) is a specialized, hands-on process developed by Greg Roskopf 30 years ago. MAT focuses on identifying and correcting muscle inhibition by addressing neuromuscular imbalances at their root. MAT is not about simply warming up muscles—it’s a comprehensive approach that systematically evaluates and treats muscle function.

Let’s break down the 5-step MAT process:

Step 1. Comparative Mobility Assessment (CAM®):

Measures limb movement on both sides of the body to detect muscle imbalances and potential dysfunctions.

Step 2. Muscle Contract and Sustain (AMC&S®) Test:

Tests how well a muscle contracts and holds against resistance to assess neuromuscular function.

Step 3. Targeted Muscle Activation (DFAMAT®):

Applies specific pressure to muscle attachment points to stimulate muscle function, not a massage or release technique.

Step 4. Recheck Muscle Function:

Repeats the AMC&S® test to confirm muscle activation has improved.

Step 5. Recheck Range of Motion:

Evaluates if muscle function has been restored, providing clear feedback on treatment effectiveness.

This step-by-step system is unique to MAT and provides a clear framework for assessing and improving muscle function. By focusing on muscle contractile capabilities, MAT offers a targeted approach that addresses the root causes of muscle dysfunction. This proprietary system of “checks and balances” provides clarity for both MAT practitioner and their clients.

Most MAT clients experience some level of pain or discomfort and have often tried other therapies like physical therapy, massage, or chiropractic care without lasting success. MAT focuses on correcting muscle inhibition, the root cause of many issues, rather than just addressing symptoms. This approach leads to quicker, more lasting results, with many clients experiencing noticeable improvements within 1-3 sessions.

The MAT education path begins with the Jumpstart Program, designed as the foundational entry point for anyone new to MAT. It’s an ideal starting place for beginners, including physical therapists, athletic trainers, and exercise professionals looking to expand their skills. In this course, you’ll learn the core principles of MAT, how the nervous and muscular systems communicate, and the basics of assessing and treating muscle inhibition. Jumpstart also includes over 100 step-by-step videos accessible on any device.

While we encourage everyone to start with Jumpstart to grasp the foundational principles, we understand that some individuals may already have a strong understanding of MAT—whether through personal experience as a client or familiarity with an MAT therapist. In such cases, you may be eligible to bypass Jumpstart and move directly to the Specialist level. If you believe you qualify, you can apply for a waiver by filling out a quick application HERE. Your application will be reviewed by the MAT Education team.

Once you’ve completed or bypassed Jumpstart, the Specialist Certification is your next step. This level dives deeper into the application of MAT techniques and is broken down into three key certifications:

  • Lower Body
  • Upper Body
  • Trunk & Spine.

Each of these areas contains multiple courses covering advanced muscle function, muscle/joint stability, and corrective techniques. The Specialist level is designed for professionals seeking to master neuromuscular treatment and achieve more significant client outcomes

Once you complete the Jumpstart Program, you’re ready to take your MAT education to the next level with the Specialist Certification. This advanced, clinical level dives deeper into the application of MAT techniques and is divided into three key areas: Lower Body, Upper Body, and Trunk & Spine. Each area includes multiple courses that cover advanced muscle function, joint/muscle stability, and corrective techniques.

You’ll continue to build your expertise, enhance client outcomes, and further distinguish yourself in the field of neuromuscular health. This progression allows you to become a certified MAT Specialist, positioning you for more advanced opportunities and greater professional success.

If sales and marketing aren’t your strengths, don’t worry. With MAT, your results will do the talking. The effectiveness of MAT naturally generates referrals as clients experience real, immediate improvements. This approach reduces the need for aggressive marketing, allowing you to focus on your skill set while building a steady flow of clients through word-of-mouth.

No, MAT is not intended to diagnose or directly treat pain or any medical conditions. The primary goal of MAT is to improve muscle contractile efficiency and optimize movement. However, it’s important to understand that when muscle function is improved, clients may naturally experience a reduction or even elimination of pain. This doesn’t mean MAT is treating pain directly; rather, it’s addressing the muscle imbalances that can contribute to discomfort.

While some clients do find relief from pain as a by-product of better muscle function, MAT therapists focus solely on restoring muscle activation and mobility—not on diagnosing or treating pain itself. If a client’s pain is rooted in a medical condition, they should work with licensed medical professionals, with MAT serving as a complementary approach.

In summary, MAT can play a crucial role in improving how your muscles work, which may reduce pain, but the process is not designed or intended to treat pain as a medical condition. This clear distinction allows MAT therapists to work effectively within their scope while providing real value to their clients.
